Why do I keep breaking out living in a tropical climate like Cairns?

Heat and humidity increase oil and sweat production, which can clog pores and trigger breakouts. In tropical climates, some breakouts are actually a fungal condition that looks like acne but needs a different approach.

Research in this area is emerging, and findings may be refined as more studies are published.

Heat and humidity change the skin’s environment in ways that make breakouts more likely and, for some people, more stubborn than the breakouts they might be used to in a drier or cooler climate.

Why humidity affects breakouts

Higher temperatures increase oil (sebum) production, and humidity slows how quickly sweat evaporates from the skin. The combination of sweat, oil, dead skin cells and everyday grime creates a sticky layer that can block pores more easily. This is why breakouts in a tropical climate are often more persistent and can flare up faster after exercise, humid weather or heavy sunscreen use.

Acne or fungal acne?

Not every breakout in a hot, humid climate is typical acne. Malassezia yeast, which lives naturally on everyone’s skin, can multiply more readily in warm, humid conditions and cause a condition often called fungal acne, technically Malassezia folliculitis. It tends to look like small, uniform, itchy bumps rather than the mixed blackheads, whiteheads and larger inflamed spots typical of ordinary acne, and it does not respond to standard acne treatments in the same way, since it is not caused by the same bacteria.

What tends to help

For typical acne, lightweight, non-comedogenic (oil-free) skincare and sunscreen, regular cleansing after sweating, and avoiding heavy occlusive products can all help. If breakouts look uniform, itchy and unresponsive to usual acne products, that pattern is worth mentioning specifically in a consultation, since fungal acne needs a different approach and treating it as ordinary acne can make it linger longer than necessary.
